AZZEDINE ALAÏA - Je Suis Couturier

AZZEDINE ALAÏA - Je Suis Couturier

Azzedine Alaïa was one of the great couturiers. A man with a destiny, he ignored the fashion calendar and obeyed no rules but his own. This exhibition Je suis Couturier is not so much about looking back at the designers life but celebrating the timelessness of his work, which is as relevant today as originally intended.

Azzedine Alaia

Tunisian by birth Alaïa lived in Paris, and was renowned for his ‘second skin’ creations – sensuous body hugging forms. Dubbed the King of Cling, he was a hands-on creator who constantly challenged himself, and a designer that evidently loved dressing women.

‘My obsession is to make women beautiful. When you create with that in mind, things can’t go out of fashion.’

Alaia King of Cling

Alaïa originally trained as a sculptor in Tunisia and began his career in fashion in Haute Couture at the houses of Christian Dior and later Guy Laroche before going on to establish his own Maison Alaïa. His designs are works of art, sculptures for the body that he created using his hands to shape and mould the fabric, in the same way a sculptor uses clay. He is renowned for employing Haute Couture techniques in his Prêt à Porter pieces, where he hand-cut patterns himself and fitted originals with his own hands – sculpting and shaping fabric.

A trademark feature of his work is the intricacy of the fabric – the embellishment always integrated within the fabric as opposed to layered on top. Complex patterns, lazer cuts and eyelets are all interwoven, challenging the capabilities of the craftsman in Japan and Italy. This results in very fine knits, leathers and chiffons, that are lightweight and fluid for the wearer, sensuous on the body.

His preferred colour palette was rich, discreet and sophisticated, favouring camels, browns and greys, white and black. He loved black and wore it daily himself. He created exquisite designs in black, often seemingly reducing the complexity of the design to a graphic silhouette, but he preferred the anonymity of black as it allowed the focus to be on the wearer not the clothing.

 Alaia Black Dress

‘I like black, because for me it is a very happy colour.’

‘I always feel free. When I don’t want something I don’t make it.’

I had the pleasure recently of meeting Claire Davis of 38°N Academy and Fitness Retreats. Warm and friendly, this woman radiates energy and positivity, and is instantly likeable. It is her enthusiasm and zest for life that is infectious. Midlife to be exact – that age past 40 that no one really focuses on. Until now…

The Swimwear Shopping Experience
The Swimwear Shopping Experience

June 06, 2019

Until now, I never knew how much women dreaded swimwear shopping. That may sound naive, but being in the pop up store in London these past few weeks and meeting customers has shown me just how off putting women find the whole process. Not all women dislike trying on swimwear, but most do.

Swimwear you can swim in
Swimwear you can swim in

May 28, 2019

Have you ever looked at a swimsuit and wondered how on earth you would swim in it? It's something I think about all the time, when spectating on the beach. So many designs are for 'parading' (as we call it in the industry) or sun bathing rather than for swimming.
