ENIGMA - Where the Magic Lives

ENIGMA - Where the Magic Lives

Albert Adrià has opened many restaurants in Barcelona, all exciting, all contemporary mouth-watering culinary experiences. But one stands out from the others, as a destination for a superb dining masterpiece, and a meal that you will never forget.

ENIGMA, is the perfect name for this dining extravaganza. Serving 40 courses (some are morsels, some are cocktails) in a meandering space comprising 6 rooms, the evening can comfortably run well over 4 hours, maybe even 6 hours. No problem. . .

Located in Sant Antoni, its entrance is a mysterious corner door that you let yourself in, with a code sent with your email confirmation, as bookings are only taken online with deposits paid in advance. The evening can only be described as theatre and circus. You are seated, entertained and served, effortlessly transitioning from one room to the next, working your way around this cavernous space, finishing with ‘night caps’ at a speakeasy style bar ‘41°’.

The interiors are amusingly odd and feel futuristic in grey, and bordering on the bleak, conjuring up a landscape that is disconnecting, from reality. It’s immersive and feels vast, spartan rather than warmly plush, but with a quality that transports you. The waiting staff uniform appears an odd choice at first glance, neutral and utilitarian, and then you quickly realise that this is a place where the food takes centre stage.

You meet other diners along the way, possibly sharing a grill station or fish bar with them, but really everyone is absorbed in their own experience. Patrons are allowed to take photos but it’s not encouraged – and it is requested not to post imagery of the dishes to social media (not the done thing here).

Informal, fun and interactive, you can chat with the chefs at the stations and feel their intensity, their overwhelming passion for what they do. They are more like curators, artists and showmen, how they talk you through the dish, working with ease and letting you see up close what their processes are.

Each dish is creatively conceived and ceremoniously introduced at the table. Playful pairings to tickle the taste-buds and mouth-watering combinations delight, all looking artistically elaborate and picturesque. From raspberry pods that will evaporate in seconds, to fiery sea cucumbers, mackerel gonad, wagyu beef with sea urchin and many more ‘firsts’ it feels surprisingly relaxed and informal, which adds to the overall enjoyment. Not so indulgent that you are uncomfortably waddling away from the table, these dishes are just delicious and deeply satisfying.

When you leave, the back of the menu reads like the credits of a film, and you realise how many people, how much meticulous coordination and working as one is required to bring this truly memorable experience to life.

This is where the magic happens.

The words 'boutique hotel' seem to be used a lot these days, and not always correctly. In the same way that ‘luxury’ is mis-used, so too is the word boutique. My belief is that boutique means small, eclectic, non-formulaic and tasteful. I expect it to be conceived by a taste-maker, maybe even be a little quirky.
