Maurice Mullen is one of the best dressed gentlemen in London. Eye catching, in showstopper head to toe tailoring, he undoubtedly has impeccable taste. Each element of his ensemble has meaning, and shows great care and consideration in how it has been put together, on any given day. There is always a charming story to be told, whether it’s about the lapel pin or the plaid print or that intriguing shade of blue. This celebration of the finer things in life runs deeper than his sartorial excellence, he has made it an art.

Interview

1. Is there a phrase, motto or saying that sums up your attitude to life?

‘It is a wretched taste to be gratified with mediocrity when the excellent lies before us’ Isaac D’Israeli

2. Who is your style icon?

There are many stylish men and women I admire so the ultimate one would have to be an amalgam of the dress sense of Neil Munro ‘Bunny’ Roger, the wit of Noel Coward or Dorothy Parker and the spending power of Marchesa Luisa Casati!

3. When you ‘clinch the deal and make it happen’, how do you reward yourself?

When I was younger I’d have marked a success with some kind of acquisition, but these days I’m keener on experiences - a weekend at Gleneagles, a night at the theatre, a Michelin-starred dinner - to mark a special occasion and fix a memory in my mind.

4. Tell me about a ‘guilty pleasure’?

In purely material terms it’s a tie from Hermès or a beautiful silk pocket square by Rosemary Goodenough but more often than not it’s switching off my ‘phone and sitting down with a glass of wine and a good book (I’m in the midst of ‘Weatherland’ by Alexandra Harris at the moment and it’s a work of genius…).

5. They say that true craftsmanship is eternal, can you tell me about something of yours?

I’m the proud owner of a 1930 gold J.W. Benson pocket watch which I inherited in the 70’s and which still keeps perfect time. Garrards now own the Benson name so it’s in good hands but I’m still impressed by its level of craftsmanship and fitness for purpose.

6. On a difficult day, what can truly lift your spirits?

Firstly, the recognition that it’s just 24 hours and, as Scarlett O’Hara so accurately pointed out, ‘after all, tomorrow is another day’. Secondly a strategic vodka martini or a glass of champagne usually make the world seem a little brighter!

7. Talk us through your wardrobe – Any ‘do’s & don’t’s’?

The late Sir Hardy Amies gave some excellent advice about male dressing. He said ‘a man should look as if he has bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care and then forgotten all about them’ There’s a lot of truth in that. You should be wearing the clothes and not the other way round! As for my own wardrobe I tend to favour suits at work and wear mainly Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood & Alexander McQueen. I always wear a tie (with a full or half Windsor knot) and my most of my shirts are custom-made at Grosvenor. I try to avoid being too coordinated – better a contrast than a bad match they say – but I do believe in memorable details: subtle monogramming perhaps or a small boutonnière.

8. Do you have a ‘off duty’ look and, if so, is there an item that signifies ‘holiday’ for you?

Beyond a certain age ‘off duty’ dressing can be a minefield but remember ‘relaxed’ isn’t a synonym for ‘sloppy’. Fine gauge cashmere sweaters, silk shirts and tailored shorts (if the weather is right and you have the legs for them!) all say ‘age appropriate’ & ‘considered’.

9. Of all your treasured possessions, which one gives you the most pleasure?

My memories. I’ve been lucky enough - so far - to have enjoyed a happy fulfilled life with a job I love and friends who mean a great deal to me. As a long-time diary keeper, I have a repository of experiences dating back many years and, even if things were to go wrong, these would continue to sustain and inspire me.
