The Rosewood Hotel

The Rosewood Hotel

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Rosewood Hotel in London. As London is my home, I love when the opportunity arises to stay centrally and explore the city like a visitor, but with the savvy knowledge of a native. I enjoy staying in fine hotels. There is something very free & easy, relaxing and detached about soaking up the atmosphere in sumptuous surroundings, and being cared for like you’re royalty.

The Rosewood offers just that. Located a stone’s throw from the vibrancy of Covent Garden, it is a joyful cocoon of splendidness. Tucked away under the grand arch, the courtyard entrance sets the tone. It’s as if you’re entering a good friend’s home, an urban residence, bathed in rosé hues of warmth and welcome.

The building itself is grade II listed and has been lovingly restored to retain that decadent grandeur. It has authenticity, discretion and it’s truly luxurious in its proportion. The rooms are sumptuous, stylishly decorated in a rich but sombre palette of colour and texture. Plush greys and monochrome glossy lacquers intermingle with deep dark woods and rich leathers. The bathrooms are a beautiful expanse of marble, a material used generously throughout the Rosewood.

Martin Brudnizki designed Holborn Dining Rooms in Covent Garden

We dined in the Holborn Dining Rooms which is an airy delightful space, with a relaxed kick back feel to it, designed by Martin Brudnizki. The shrimp burger is a signature dish and not to be missed, and the cocktail list is as exciting as it is dangerous. I had a Milanese Martini with porcini syrup which was divine.

And then, there is the Gin Bar.

The spa is award winning, and has an impressive choice of relaxation and rejuvenating treatments on offer. The crystal steam room alone is worth a visit, so pack your swimwear.

But the truly remarkable feature of the Rosewood, beyond the architecture, décor and glossy brilliance, and in my view, what makes it distinctive in its category, is the service. The staff are impeccable, across the board. They are warm and welcoming, efficient and respectful – the attributes we have come to expect in a luxury space, but we don’t always receive. But what they excel at is ‘connection’. They engage with you by way of empathetic listening, picking up on the nuances of the conversation and finding a genuine, human talking point. There is nothing text book about their approach. It’s personal, authentic and perfectly pitched.

A bolthole, from the madding crowd.

Azzedine Alaia was one of the great couturiers. A man with a destiny, he ignored the fashion calendar and obeyed no rules but his own. This exhibition Je suis Couturier  is not so much about looking back at the designers life but celebrating the timelessness of his work, which is as relevant today as originally intended.

The words 'boutique hotel' seem to be used a lot these days, and not always correctly. In the same way that ‘luxury’ is mis-used, so too is the word boutique. My belief is that boutique means small, eclectic, non-formulaic and tasteful. I expect it to be conceived by a taste-maker, maybe even be a little quirky.
